It was a breezy evening in May filled with exceptional smooth jazz as the Louis Heard Trio delivered an unforgettable performance at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Little Rock, Arkansas. Members of the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation, including myself, were in attendance, enjoying the band’s outstanding performance while celebrating the rich tradition and preservation of jazz in Arkansas.

The trio is so cool – it captivated the audience with its effortless blend of smooth grooves, dynamic showmanship, and impeccable musicianship. Performing a mix of jazz favorites and contemporary classics, the group demonstrated remarkable versatility and audience appeal. Additionally, in the wake of the new Michael biopic, it jazzed up some of the King of Pop’s chart-topping hits, earning enthusiastic responses from the crowd.

Leading the ensemble was Louis Heard on vocals and keyboards, whose soulful delivery and engaging stage presence anchored the performance. He was joined by bassist Mex Campbell, whose smooth, rhythmic lines provided a solid foundation throughout the evening, and drummer Rodrick Pleasants, whose precision and energy added depth and excitement to every selection. Together, the three musicians created a sound far greater than their numbers, showcasing the chemistry and professionalism that have made them a favorite among local jazz enthusiasts.

For anyone visiting Little Rock or searching for an outstanding live jazz experience, the Louis Heard Trio is must-see. Their blend of smooth jazz, classic influences, and contemporary flair makes for an entertaining and memorable evening.

The Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation is proud to support and spotlight jazz musicians, bands, and educational initiatives throughout the Natural State. Through concert attendance, community engagement, educational outreach, and the preservation of the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame, the Foundation remains committed to honoring Arkansas’s rich jazz legacy while promoting the next generation of jazz artists.
